Few things are as annoying as a printer that keeps pushing out blank pages, especially when there is still ink in the cartridge and it was printing fine yesterday. The good news is that most blank-page problems have a simple reason and an easy fix. Here are the common ones.
1. Empty or Near-Empty Ink Cartridge
This is the most obvious one. Even if your printer shows ink left, the sensor is often wrong. Take the cartridge out and shake it gently so the ink spreads evenly. For a better reading, check the ink level in the printer software on your computer, not just on the printer screen.
Fix: Put in a genuine cartridge, or a good quality compatible one. A cartridge that was not refilled properly can also act as if it is empty.
2. Clogged Print Head Nozzles
This is the most common reason for blank pages in inkjet printers, especially Epson, Canon PIXMA and HP DeskJet models. When a printer sits idle for a week or more, the ink dries up and blocks the tiny nozzles in the print head.
Fix: Run the print head cleaning option from the printer's control panel or software (usually under Maintenance or Tools), then print a nozzle check to see if it worked. You may need to run the cleaning 2 to 3 times. If it still prints blank after 3 rounds, the head likely needs a manual clean or replacement.
3. Protective Tape Not Removed (New Cartridge)
Every new cartridge has a strip of tape or plastic film over the nozzles to stop it drying in transit. It is easy to miss, even people who change cartridges often forget this one.
Fix: Take the cartridge out and look for any orange, yellow or clear tape on the bottom (the nozzle area) or on the copper contacts. Peel it off fully before putting the cartridge back.
4. Incorrect Paper or Printer Settings
If the printer is set for a paper type that does not match what is loaded (say it is set to "transparency film" but you have put plain paper), it can change how the ink is laid down and give you blank pages.
Fix: In the print window, make sure the paper type matches what is actually in the tray. Also check that the text has not been set to white on a white background by mistake.
5. Print Head Alignment Issue
If the print head is badly out of alignment, the ink lands in the wrong place and the page can look blank even though ink is being used. This usually happens after a cartridge change or a knock to the printer.
Fix: Run the print head alignment option from the Maintenance settings. Most printers do this on their own after a cartridge change, but you can also start it yourself.
6. Corrupted Printer Driver or Print Job
A stuck or corrupted job in the print queue can make the pages after it come out blank. An old or damaged driver can also read the document wrongly.
Fix: Clear the print queue (on Windows, open Services, stop the Print Spooler, delete the files in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, then restart it). After that, uninstall the driver and reinstall the latest one from the maker's website.
7. Defective or Incompatible Cartridge
Cheap third-party or badly refilled cartridges sometimes have a faulty chip the printer cannot read, or air bubbles that block the ink. The printer goes through the motion of printing but no ink comes out.
Fix: Try another cartridge, a genuine one or a compatible one you know is good. If the blank pages stop with the new cartridge, the old one was faulty.
When to Call a Technician
If you have tried all seven fixes and the printer is still printing blank, the problem is most likely in the hardware:
- Print head is permanently clogged and needs replacement
- Print head driver board is faulty
- Ink pump or damper assembly needs replacement
- Main board failure (less common)
These jobs need the right tools and some experience. If you are in Coimbatore and the blank pages will not stop, just call us. We fix blank-page problems on all brands, and our technician can come to your place and sort it out the same day in most cases.
